Solitary Retreats

1. Retreats huts

retreat hut

Nalanda has two retreat huts on its premises where monks and male lay people can do solitary retreats – preliminary, lamrim and tantric retreats. The huts have the classical form of a small house and have been built as ecologically as possible. They have electricity, are heated, and well-insulated. The retreat huts are situated in a quiet corner of Nalanda’s premises. The place has been selected by Lama Zopa Rinpoche and it has been recommended by Khandro-la as a very good place for doing a retreat. Besides the serenity of a monastic setting, retreatants can benefit from the advice of the resident Geshes and monks, and they can receive teachings.

2. Rooms in the new monks building

Recently our new monks building has been finished. It is a very beautiful, ecological, wooden building. Four of these rooms have been reserved for lay men do to serious retreats at Nalanda.

For women wanting to do a solitary retreat at Nalanda

Unfortunately, we cannot host women for solitary retreats, as during night time in the monastery only men are allowed. However, during collective retreats in January, July and August we accept both men and women. If you are interested to do a solitary retreat, you can address our sister Dharma centre nearby:

Vajra Yogini Institute

Dorje Pamo Nunnery

Both places are affiliated with the FPMT and located within 15-20 minutes drive from Nalanda.

Please do not make any travel arrangements to come to Nalanda until you have received your invitation as a temporary resident or guest.

A retreat place is not for gaining power, like black magic, it’s not for a honeymoon or holiday. Also, it is not a place to be spaced out. The whole purpose is to subdue the mind and to actualize the lam-rim, up to enlightenment. It is a place for a holiday from negative karma, from the three poisonous minds, and the self-cherishing thought, a holiday from the self-grasping of the person and phenomena, a holiday from the wrong concepts: non-devotional thought towards the guru up to the subtle dual view of white, increasing, attainment.
