Following the Most Secret Hayagriva Initiation that will be given by His Holiness Ganden Trisur Rinpoche Lobsang Tenzin at Nalanda Monastery on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th July, a two-week retreat will be organised on the grounds of the monastery.

A very rare opportunity

The practice of Hayagriva can be traced back to ancient India, to masters such as Mahasiddha Nagarjuna and Guru Rinpoche. It was then developed in Tibet and practised by other realised beings such as the Great Fifth Dalai Lama, Lama Tsongkhapa, etc. This unbroken lineage reached Sera Jey Monastery in Lhasa and has been maintained purely in Tibet.

Today, Hayagriva is the supra mundane protector of Sera Jey Monastery in South India, where only a few monks study deeply and practise Hayagriva extensively. The Most Secret Hayagriva retreat is performed every year at Sera Jey with all the monks, otherwise it is quite rare as it requires a very qualified monk to prepare all the necessary conditions.

Our abbot, Geshe Jamphel-la, will be the Lobon during the retreat.

Geshe Thubten Sonam was born in 1964 in Dharamsala, India. He became a monk at the age of 8 and joined Sera Jey Monastery. He received the Getsul ordination from the previous Trijang Rinpoche in 1976, and the Gelong ordination from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1990. After studying the Five Great Treatises and the Vinaya, he received the scholastic title of Geshe in 1994.

Geshe Thubten Sonam has led many Sera Jey Tours in the East (Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan) as well as in the West (USA and Europe).

He has extensive experience in various prayers and rituals such as Hayagriva or sand mandalas. He has often served as an assistant during various Hayagriva empowerments given by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Ganden Trisur Rinpoche Lobsang Tenzin, Lama Zopa Rinpoche and a former abbot of Sera Jey.

Geshe-la has led several Hayagriva retreats: in 1997 with Lama Zopa Rinpoche at Vajrapani Institute (California) and others in Northern India. This retreat at Nalanda Monastery will be the first to be led by Geshe-la in Europe.
