Nalanda EcoDharma

Nalanda EcoDharma, the union of buddhist practice and ecology

The Buddhas’ teachings can be help society to overcome the ecological and social crises it is facing today. A truly life-affirming, creative and sustainable future is possible. But such a future depends upon a radical transformation of both our values and our awarenass.

At Nalanda Monastery, we are devoted to study, to practice and to meditate in order to integrate the transformative qualities of wisdom, compassion y loving-kindness for the sake of all sentient beings.

As a buddhist monastery our mission is to reduce suffering wherever we can and promote happiness and well-being in our eco-systems by applying the Buddha’s teachings. We aim at transforming our community and way of life to be as caring and sustainable as possible.

Wisdom helps us to understand the interconnectedness of all phenomena including animals, plants, forests, oceans and the earth itself. Our human well-being depends on that of all the complex eco-systems of this planet, on which we are mere visitors.

Compassion helps us to realize that all living beings wish for happiness and do not want suffering. Having attained this precious human rebirth, it is our duty and responsibility to ensure that all sentient beings obtain the causes for happiness, or at the very least not to create any more suffering. Through the practice of compassion we try to reduce the suffering in the world and wish to lead all sentient beings to real peace and lasting happiness.

Compassionate care for this life and all future lives

Where there is a mind, there are feelings such as pain, pleasure, and joy. No sentient being wants pain; instead all want happiness. Since we all share these feelings at some basic level, we as rational human beings have an obligation to contribute in whatever way we can to the happiness of other species and try our best to relieve their fears and sufferings.
