Lam Rim Summer Retreat at Nalanda

We are pleased to announce that Nalanda will be able to organize a one month lam rim retreat during July 2020. The retreat is formed by three cycles and it is possible to join one, two or all three cycles.

About Lam Rim

“The most important thing is the continuity of developing your mind in the lam-rim, the stages of the path to enlightenment. It doesn't matter if you are in Africa, in Tibet, on the moon, in Iraq, etc., whether you are rich or poor, whatever, continue to develop your mind in the lam-rim. This is the most important thing.”

Lama Zopa Rinpoche

In Tibetan “lam rim” means the stages of the path. In brief, it is a system that presents the entirety of the Buddha’s teachings in a structured meditation manual that a spiritual seeker practices to gradually progress up to full enlightenment. Not only does it present many methods to counteract destructive emotions and thoughts for everyday life but it presents a very systematic approach to develop the mind into its greatest potential. It allows the person to gradually change the mind’s obsession with only this life to take care of future lives, to let go of cyclic existence altogether, and finally to cultivate the altruistic wish for complete enlightenment.

You can read more about the benefits of Lam Rim in daily life in this article of Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

General information

The retreat will span from the 6th to the 30th July. Participants can do the entire retreat or just one or two cycles. The day you start the retreat you will have to “check in” in the community building where we will welcome you, give you texts and other retreat material and show you your accommodation.

More information about texts and practices will be published in the second half of March.

Parts of the retreat will be in silence.

The teachings will be guided in English with simultaneous French translation.

The retreat will consist of 3 cycles*

This retreat is directed to complete beginners as well as to people with more familiarity. It will follow the classical Buddhist procedure of integrating a topic, which means that the first cycle will emphasize learning about the lam rim topics, while the second cycle will emphasize contemplation about what has learned to listening, and finally the third cycle will emphasize meditation.

All three cycles will, however, include elements of teachings, contemplation and meditations. The boundaries are not absolute but give an indication where the emphasize will be.

The first cycle is suitable for those with no or little prior knowledge of Buddhism in general and lam rim in particular. The second cycle is suitable for those with prior knowledge. The third cycle is suitable for people who are bit more experienced and have studied Buddhism a bit more in depth.
