Amidst an exceptional series of events with His Eminence Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Delek at Nalanda Monastery this summer, we will have the great joy of celebrating the 90th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This event will mark the begining of “The Year of Compassion” that will last until July 6 2026.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born on July 6, 1935, in Taktser, a small village in Amdo, northeastern Tibet. Recognized at the age of two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, he is considered by Tibetan Buddhists as the human manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Enthroned in Lhasa in 1940, he assumed full political power in 1950 amid the growing threat of Chinese occupation.

After the 1959 Tibetan uprising, His Holiness went into exile in India, where he established the Central Tibetan Administration in Dharamsala. Since then, he has tirelessly worked for the preservation of Tibetan culture and the promotion of human values, nonviolence, interfaith dialogue, and universal responsibility.

He has received numerous international awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, for his unwavering commitment to peaceful resistance. Deeply respected for his spiritual insight and humility, His Holiness remains a guiding light for millions of Buddhists worldwide.

Despite his global influence, he lives a simple monastic life. His teachings emphasize compassion, altruism, and the unity of all sentient beings. He continues to inspire others with his boundless compassion and deep wisdom.
