His Holiness Ganden Tri Rinpoche is the holder of the golden throne of Ganden, the supreme head of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism and successor to the King of Dharma Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419). Till this day, this holy lineage is unbroken. The current throne holder is His Holiness the 104th Ganden Tri Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Tenzin.
Born in Tibet in 1934, Rinpoche was ordained as a monk at the age of seven. He entered Sera Jey Monastery at seventeen and obtained his Geshe Lharampa degree in 1979. Following this, he entered Gyume Tantric University and two years later became Master of Discipline.
In 1985 His Holiness the Dalai Lama appointed him abbot of Gyume Tantric Monastery, a position he held for 6 years. Since then he has taught extensively in India and the West. Rinpoche In 2010 he was appointed to the position of Jangtse Choje, Successor to the Seat of Ganden Tripa.
The Ganden Tripas were not just spiritual heads of the Gelugpa school, but they were also often tutors to the Dalai Lamas and the Panchen Lamas and acted as Regents of Tibet in the absence of the Dalai Lama.
The title of the Ganden Tripa is not a reincarnation lineage but an appointed title held for a period of seven years. It is awarded based on merit and only the best Buddhist scholar and practitioner can ascend the golden throne of Ganden. In April 2017, Kyabje Jetsun Lobsang Tenzin Palsangpo was appointed the 104th Ganden Tripa. In July 2025, he will become Ganden Tri Rinpoche.
